Legacy MediaTech Field Guide

Planning a modern broadcast workflow.

A practical framework for translating operational requirements into a reliable media system—from production and playout to IP transport, monitoring, deployment, and support.

01 / Requirements

Begin with the operation.

Document what the team produces, how people work, which services are critical, and what must happen when conditions change. Technology should simplify this workflow, not force the workflow to fit the equipment.

Programs, channels, events, and delivery platforms
Current and future source capacity
Operators, facilities, venues, and audiences
Failure tolerance, budget, skills, and timeline
02 / Production

Design around the people creating the program.

Map cameras and microphones through switching, graphics, replay, audio, recording, and program output. Include tally, intercom, prompting, confidence monitoring, metadata, and control.

03 / Playout

Protect the schedule and the service.

Plan ingest, media validation, traffic integration, branding, live-event handling, redundancy, logging, and escalation. Define how an operator takes control and how the channel recovers after a failure.

04 / IP Transport

Choose IP technology by outcome.

Balance latency, picture quality, bandwidth, interoperability, security, and resilience for every connection.

Bandwidth and latency targets
Primary and backup paths
Protocols, codecs, and endpoints
Security, access, and monitoring
05 / Monitoring

Make problems visible and actionable.

Monitor acquisition, production output, playout, contribution, encoding, packaging, and delivery. Alerts should explain service impact and reach the person who can respond.

06 / Resilience

Design recovery before failure.

Define failure scenarios, backup capacity, automatic and manual switching, recovery time, spares, and communication procedures.

Operational test

For every critical component, ask what happens when it fails during a live program. The answer should be documented, practical, and rehearsed.

07 / Deployment

Plan integration, training, and support.

A complete project includes drawings, records, labeling, acceptance testing, operator training, engineering handover, software management, and lifecycle support.
