IP video & remote production.
A practical planning guide for moving live video, audio, communications, control, and return feeds between venues, studios, data centers, and cloud services.
Begin with the path.
Document every source, destination, available network, service provider, and operating location. Measure real bandwidth, consistency, congestion, and packet loss—not only the advertised connection speed.
Set an end-to-end latency target.
Contribution, remote switching, camera shading, intercom, prompting, and audience delivery have different delay limits. Include encoding, buffering, transport, decoding, processing, displays, and return feeds in the calculation.
Select transport by operating requirement.
SRT, RIST, RTMP, HLS, NDI, SMPTE ST 2110, and other technologies solve different problems. Evaluate interoperability, recovery behavior, security, management, and support before standardizing.
Use path diversity for field resilience.
Bonding multiple cellular and network connections can protect live contribution where a single path is unreliable. Plan modem diversity, carrier coverage, data capacity, power, antennas, and remote management.
Two connections are not truly redundant when they depend on the same provider, tower, cable route, power source, or local gateway.
Design both directions.
A successful remote workflow includes confidence video, program audio, IFB, intercom, prompting, graphics references, tally, and control. Return paths need the same attention as the contribution feed.
Keep every endpoint visible and controlled.
Monitor link health, bitrate, latency, packet recovery, decoder status, and signal quality. Protect systems with encryption, strong access control, segmented networks, maintained software, and clear ownership.
Test recovery before the live event.
Document loss-of-network, encoder, decoder, power, and operator scenarios. Validate failover, return-feed recovery, local recording, communications, and escalation under realistic conditions.
